In traditional ceramics, I learned that good work comes from using the best materials, but this time, I’ve used old recycled and repurposed materials from around me to create new works for this exhibition.
I put layers of old clothes on a pot that I threw on a wheel with reclaimed clay. I made the glaze with ash and eggshells from my home and I decorated them with fragments of stones, metal and glasses that I collected while walking along the Yarra river.
In the hot kiln, the layers of cloth melted away, leaving only the texture of the cloth. The stones and glass pieces melted and remained as decorations on the glaze. When I look at the work that comes out while repeating this process, I get the feeling that they are people constantly decorating and consuming. Like the marks left on pottery in a hot kiln, everything we consume and throw away does not disappear, but remains on this earth. In our society, which always chases the new and shiny, I hope that my work made from these old, worthless, and discarded things will have some meaning.
